• It covers the details on how you wish to be cared for if you become very seriously ill, including a Living Will
and Durable Powers of Attorney.
• It gives advice and a place to fill out your instructions about your choice of a cemetery or other resting place,
mortuary and funeral arrangements, memorial or other types of services, joining a memorial society to minimize
funeral costs, arrangements regarding donating your body to science, and newspaper information.
• It provides survivors with a list of immediate after-death contacts and phone numbers and suggests noting the
people you might wish to have as pall bearers. This is convenient at a most awkward time. In their grief,
people often don't think clearly and may make errors such as being sold costly funeral services that might
directly contradict your wishes, which should be honored.
• It also provides a checklist for survivors to turn to in the immediate period after death so they know the steps
to take. In addition, there is a helpful checklist for the days and weeks following death—outlining who should
be notified, getting information about benefits and insurance, canceling credit cards, probating a will and
numerous other practical steps.
• It provides guidance and planning space to be filled out with your personal information, such as social
insurance number, marital history, religious ceremonies and military status, as well as a documents and
property checklist, including where to find your important papers—insurance policies, stocks, will, bank
accounts and so on. It is amazing how ill informed many people are about life insurance policies, social security
benefits, pensions and profit-sharing plans that have often been made years before. Working through this
section may give you a few surprises.
